Advancing Robotics through Flagship Projects
Focused Collaboration
The Stanford Robotics Center (SRC) will host a number of “Flagship Projects” as a concrete way to foster collaboration and advance the field of robotics within our five areas of study: Field Robotics, Domestic Robotics, Medical Robotics, the Future of Work, and Education/Culture. These are aimed to anticipate and deliver solutions to society’s coming needs as the robotics revolution brings these systems more closely into our working and daily lives.
Flagships build on and contribute to a common development platform in establishing and enhancing core robot capabilities aimed at meeting the requirements of intelligent and supportive human-robot interaction.
What Makes a Flagship Project
Ideal flagships meet all of these criteria:
Industry Involvement: Each flagship project will include at least one member company actively interested in and contributing to the project, ensuring relevance to real-world applications and industry needs.
Multi-disciplinary: A flagship project must involve faculty and researchers from multiple departments, combining different research areas to tackle complex challenges.
Significant Societal Impact: Each project will address a major societal challenge or opportunity, such as improving healthcare, enhancing sustainability, or transforming the future of work.
Innovation and Technological Advancement: Flagship projects will push the boundaries of current technology, aiming for groundbreaking advancements that set new standards in the field.
Resource Commitment: The SRC will provide space and core resources for flagship projects, and will augment the efforts of contributing labs. Flagship projects highlight individual application requirements while building upon the core technology base.
Educational Value: Flagship projects will provide substantial opportunities for graduate students and other researchers to learn and develop new skills, fostering the next generation of robotics experts.
