Stanford researchers and Air Force partner to test AI copilots

“Pilots train intensely for emergencies, but accident databases show that many mishaps stem from human error. If we can get the right information to the pilot as quickly as possible, we can significantly improve safety.”

- Mykel Kochenderfer

Engineers from Stanford collaborated with the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (TPS) and the DAF-Stanford AI Studio to assess the potential of an AI “copilot” to aid pilots during the most challenging phases of flight. This system aims to assist pilots in diagnosing issues, alleviating their workload, and facilitating quicker responses in emergencies where every second counts. The collaboration originated in the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory, led by Mykel Kochenderfer, associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics and SRC faculty member, which focuses on developing decision-making systems for safety-critical environments.
